The Tibetan Mastiff is one of the oldest, largest, and most awe-inspiring dog breeds in the world — an ancient Himalayan guardian whose history on the Tibetan Plateau stretches back thousands of years, with references to large Tibetan dogs appearing in Chinese records as far back as 1100 BC. The breed is believed to be the ancestral foundation from which many of the world's great Mastiff and mountain dog breeds descended, including the Saint Bernard, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. For centuries, the Tibetan Mastiff served as the guardian of Tibetan monasteries, villages, and nomadic camps, protecting livestock and people from wolves, leopards, bears, and tigers in some of the most remote and extreme terrain on Earth. Tibetan nomads would tether the dogs outside their tents at night — a practice that gave rise to the Tibetan saying "Khyi is the guardian of the night." The breed is massive — males typically weigh between 90 and 150 pounds, though some individuals exceed 200 pounds — with a broad, heavy head, deeply set dark eyes, and a profuse double coat that forms a dramatic lion-like mane around the neck and shoulders, particularly pronounced in males. The coat comes in black, black and tan, brown, blue-gray, and gold, with or without tan markings. The Tibetan Mastiff is also notable for its unusual reproductive cycle — unlike most breeds, females come into season only once a year, typically in autumn, a trait shared with wolves and other primitive canids.
